BELLE GLADE The Glades Central Lady Raiders flag football team is heading to Boca Raton to compete in the state semifinal after two dominating regional playoff victories over Suncoast and Seabreeze.
The Lady Raiders shut out Suncoast 20-0 in the regional semifinal on May 3 at Glades Central High School, capturing the first-ever playoff victory in the flag football program’s history. GCHS senior Wiskierra Lemene scored all three of the Lady Raiders’ touchdowns, living up to her nickname of “Miss Everything.”
Impressively, the Lady Raiders were able to capture the victory without senior wide receiver and linebacker Dakedra Pompey, who was in Jacksonville representing Glades Central in the state track and field competition. The victory moved Glades Central into the regional final where they faced Seabreeze High School.
Glades Central coach Sam Curry and his team made the long trip up to Ormond Beach, near Daytona Beach, on May 7 to face Seabreeze and earn their shot at the state championship. Heading into the game, the Lady Raiders would get an extra boost of firepower as Pompey rejoined the team after the conclusion of track and field season.
Pompey made her presence felt early in the first half as she caught two fourth-down touchdown passes from Lemene. The Lady Raiders put another touchdown on the board before halftime, and their defense held Seabreeze scoreless in the first half.
And although Seabreeze was able to score a touchdown in the second half, that’s all they were able to put up on the Lady Raider defense as Glades Central went on to win 27-6.
The win catapults the Lady Raiders to their first-ever state semifinal appearance. They’ll travel to Boca Raton, the site of the flag football state championship, where they’ll face Miami Edison on May 12 at 10:30 a.m. in the state semifinal.
If they can get past Miami Edison, they’ll face either Clay or Robinson at 5 p.m. on May 12 in the state championship.
It’s been a historic season for the Lady Raiders, and they’ll attempt to cap it off by bringing home the state championship trophy to Glades Central High School.
