An art exhibit showcasing the attributes of the Glades is on display at Palm Beach State College’s Dolly Hand Cultural Arts Center.
Titled “Outside the Box,” the exhibit runs until Feb. 23 and features original artworks inspired by contemporary and historical attributes of the Glades’ natural and human-made environments, communities, recreational activities, education, arts, culture and industry.
It is the first public art exhibit hosted by the Dolly Hand since the COVID-19 pandemic began, and the staff is taking precautions to ensure a safe environment for all attendees. While the exhibit is free, viewers are required to schedule an appointment to see it by calling the box office at 561-993-1160.
The pieces are made of diverse materials ranging from oil, acrylic and watercolor paintings to mixed media works with beads and found objects. Also included are nine artworks created by local artists who were commissioned by the Palm Beach County Art in Public Places program to create original two-dimensional pieces that were then translated onto adhesive vinyl wraps to transform traffic signal boxes into three-dimensional sculptures and pedestrian scale murals all rolled into one.
“Traffic signal boxes are ideal canvases to enhance streetscapes, humanize the built environment and foster a unique sense of place for residents and visitors to Belle Glade and Pahokee,” Elayna Toby Singer, administrator of the Palm Beach County Art in Public Places program.
Some of the artworks are for sale. The three-dimensional sculptures and pedestrian scale murals are part of the first phase of the “Outside the Box” community art project.
Currently, there is a call to artists to apply for the second phase of the project. The deadline is Feb. 26.
