Knowledge of proper safety, accurate measurement, and utilization of hand and power tools were taught to the high school students enrolled in the Construction Academy during the first month of school. Anthony Carroll, Instructor, utilizes a career-focused project-based learning methodology to teach his students real world skills that result in a product. At this juncture, his students have constructed 8-foot hand-crafted picnic tables. The Construction Academy students will continue to develop their skills in the field of construction through the building of a shed, hanging a door, installing roof shingles, and basic wiring for lighting and air in the shed.
Picnic tables can be purchased for $250.00 in the Main Office of West Tech Monday – Thursday 8:00 am to 8:00 pm Friday 8:00 am to 4:00 pm. Cash, check, and money orders are acceptable forms a payment.
The Construction program prepares students for college and employment in the building construction industry. The program provides necessary skills to enter home–building, general contracting, and related industries. This program focuses on broad transferable skills, stresses the understanding of all aspects of the building construction industry, and demonstrates essential elements of the industry such as: architecture, engineering, planning, management, finance, technical and production skills. Incorporated in the curriculum are the underlying principles of technology, labor issues, community issues, health, safety, and environmental issues. Training occurs in the classroom, lab, and at actual job sites.
