Athlete of the Week: Glades Central’s Wiskierra Lemene

In many ways the Sport of football is the heart and soul of Belle Glade The entire community is proud of their countless stars that have gone on to play college & NFL Football. That influence has rubbed off on Wiskierra Lemene, our CBS12 Athlete of the week, who is perhaps the best flag football player to ever play at Glades Central High School.

“When you come down here, that’s all you’re going to hear,” admits Lemene. “Football, football, football, it’s the Muck. Football.”

And it’s pretty much all ‘Wisky’, as her teammates call her, has dreamed of playing since she was a kid. She’s also a soccer players, track star and volleyball player, but in her heart of hearts, her passion for football runs deep.

“I’ve been playing with the boys on my street and my brothers ever since I was little,” says Lemene with a smile. “So football was something I couldn’t wait to get to high school and do.”

Has she ever seized her opportunity. Rushing for three touchdowns in this week’s 20-0 playoff win over Suncoast, she’s passed for over 2000 yards and 23 touchdowns this season, leading the best flag football team the Raiders have ever fielded.

“She wants to show the school especially that not only can the boys bring something to the school,” says fellow Raiders senior Olmanika Milfort. “But also the girls.”

“The coaches that see her play say “wow”,” says Glades Central head coach Samuel Curry. “That # 2 she’s serious! A lot of her brothers played football, her cousin played football, so she probably grew up with a football in her hand. Ha, ha!”

“(The) size (of the player),” says Lemene. “I don’t let that intimidate me. I’m out here for a reason, and I’m gonna come and get it.”

And Lemene has the same determination in the classroom, having earned a 3.40 GPA, she’s excited to major in phycology at Florida State next year.

“I’m going to be the first one to go to college out of all my (siblings), and my parents too, so I really want to make my parents proud.”

In the meantime, is ‘Wisky’ ever making Belle Glade proud.
